Changing Your Agent: A Step-by-Step Guide

Changing Your Agent: A Step-by-Step Guide

May 28, 20253 min read

Ever felt scared to even ask how to change your insurance agent?

It seems like one of those adulting things that we'd all rather just keep on the back burner of procrastination. You might, however, find that it's much easier than you'd think! Here are 5 simple steps to changing your agent of record.

Step 1: Schedule an initial consultation.

A consultation meeting is a chance for you to "interview" the new agent you are considering, and for the agent to better understand how they can help you. These consultations normally take at least 10 minutes, but usually stretch longer in order to thoroughly answer all your questions. You'll want to think through your financial goals, coverage needs, and any questions or issues that may have arisen in the past. We highly recommend writing these down so that you can get all the information you need to make the best decision for you and your family.

A consultation is not a contract! Don't let yourself feel pressured into making any quick decisions...especially if you feel uncomfortable about the plan of action that is proposed. A good agent will hear your questions and concerns, provide easy to understand information, and wait patiently for you to make an informed decision.

Step 2: Fill out your client consent forms.

Once you have decided on your new agent, you'll be given client consent forms. Most companies, including ours, will be able to send these forms to you digitally. These forms give consent to the agent and company of your choice to access and manage your insurance plans and applications. Be sure to read these carefully, as small details may vary from company to company. Again, don't hesitate to ask questions if anything in the forms confuses you or makes you uncomfortable.

Step 3: Submit your form.

Your agent will submit your request for a change of agent to the Marketplace after they receive your consent forms. Once the request is processed, you will confirm the change on your account. Your agent will handle the submission of your request and track its progress. They should also be available to walk through the confirmation process with you.

Step 4: Transition your account.

Congratulations! You've been approved for a transfer of agent! This is where most of the busy work comes in...but your new agent should be happy to help you through the final steps of the process.

Once your accounts have been transferred to your agent of choice, you will receive confirmation from your new agent. You'll also be sent new account information and access details. Be sure to check your spam folder if you aren't seeing update emails! For our business, we will then schedule a final, quick meeting to review your transition and select a ministry you would like to support through your business with us.

Step 5: Take advantage of ongoing support and regular reviews!

Your new agent should be dedicated to providing you with any help you need as you navigate your new plan(s). They should also be taking the time to regularly review your plan(s) with you to ensure you are meeting all your financial and coverage goals. Any issues you have should be taken care of in a professional, timely manner to give you time to enjoy life with a little less stress in it.

We hope this guide has been helpful for you! If you are currently seeking a new agent who is Christ-centered and ministry-minded, we hope you'll consider scheduling with Hopkins Financial. We are proud to serve our clientele with top-notch insurance plans at affordable rates that also support ministries in their Kingdom work. We hope to meet you soon!
