The Value of Life Insurance

The Value of Life Insurance by Amy Johnson

Life insurance can be an uncomfortable topic of conversation!

When my husband first told me that his workplace had taken out a 20-year term life insurance policy on him, I didn’t like it at all. I knew very little about life insurance, and I didn’t understand the value of having a term policy.

With my husband’s family history of longevity, it seemed crazy and sad to think that this policy was almost “betting” on him passing away within twenty years.  I hated the thought!  However, since his workplace was paying the premiums, I just went on with my daily life and tried to forget about the whole thing.

But God, in His wisdom, provided ahead of time for the need I didn’t realize I would have.  Less than ten years into that term policy, my husband passed away unexpectedly.  What a blessing that life insurance turned out to be! It took the financial stress out of life while my family and I were navigating the journey of grief.

As a stay-at-home mom, I had always relied upon my husband’s income for daily expenses and monthly bills.  The life insurance provided a cushion for all of that as I figured out what to do next.  On top of that, it paid for a lot of extra things that we needed that year, including a replacement vehicle, my daughter’s wedding, and Christmas for the family.  But the over-arching blessing of it all was the removal of financial stress during that time of major life transition.

After experiencing such powerful help through my husband’s life insurance, I decided to take out a policy of my own for the benefit of my children.  Life insurance may not be a comfortable topic of conversation, and it may not be “fun” to go through the process of setting it up, but once it’s in place, it’s there for the purpose of providing for those you love.  (And the process is SO much easier if you have a good insurance agent helping you along, such as Michael Hopkins at Hopkins Financial!)

I can testify from first-hand experience how important this is.  Having a good life insurance policy is a way to help and serve the people you love the most.
